Father's Day is a special day for both fathers and sons. And Father's Day 2004 was "special" indeed. The weekend started off with family and friends coming down to help me move into a new apartment. As a reward for their hard work, and as a father's day gift, I treated the gang to a round of golf at University Ridge, an immaculate course near the University of Wisconsin.

For the 4th of July, I headed north to our cabin at Spider Lake. Joined by David Heling, his girlfriend Jodi, and my parents, we passed the days by fishing, relaxing, fishing, and blowing up large amounts of fireworks. While I'm disappointed that I didn't get pictures of the fireworks, that's probably a good thing, since I was taking care to not blow off any fingers.

I drove down to Port Charlotte, Florida from Birmingham for a visit with my parents over the long Thanksgiving weekend. What was initially supposed to only be a family visit turned into a trip of discovery of the destruction caused by a direct hit by Hurricane Charley.

For me, Christmas is a great time of year. It represents a time to see your family (most of which you don't want to see more than once a year), a time to get away from the daily grind of life and work, and, best of all, a chance to do some skiing. While it's a little more complicated now that I live in Alabama instead of Wisconsin, I saddled up for the trip north. These photos are a little bit of documentation of the hijinks that ensued.

I took a trip over Valentine's Day to visit some friends and spend some time around both Indianapolis and Lafayette. While I didn't take nearly as many pictures as I would have liked, I still managed to get a few here and there that are worth sharing.

Another 4th of July trip to Spider Lake this year, accompanied by some friends who wanted to see the cabin without several feet of snow, and some great weather. We had a nice long week of lounging around, hiking in the woods, playing golf, and generally doing a whole lot of nothing. Oh, and there were fireworks, too. You can't have a 4th of July without things that go boom.

Like last year, I headed down to my parents' villa in Florida to enjoy thanksgiving with them. While the vacation passed far too quickly, it was a great couple of days off, filled with turkey, golfing, and a whole lot of relaxing. And you really can't complain about 75 degree weather in late November, can you?

On March 18, 2006, the Gamma Pi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi celebrated its 50th Anniversary of existance. Alumni young and old, along with the current actives and prospective member class, came to Purdue University to celebrate the history and accomplishments of this fine chapter of the band service fraternity.

To the cabin! For the Labor Day holiday, I ventured up north, before it began to snow. There, I'd find a bit of time to golf, a lot of time to relax, and have the chance to cheer on Team Foxfire in the annual Spider Lake Regatta. Who would win? And more importantly, what the hell is "Flaking a Sheet?"

Up to the woods of Wisconsin again, this time to don the hunting gear and search for unsuspecting grouse to shoot. It's a bit sad this year without a dog, but it turns out shooting is, mostly, like riding a bike: You don't really forget how to do it. And as an added bonus, hunting is about the only time you can wear clear lens sunglasses and not look like a total dork.

A trip back to your alma mater for Homecoming is always special, but it's made even more special when it is an alumni band year, where the alumni of the Purdue "All-American" Marching Band come together to take the field "one more time." It was great to see the current band practice, meet up with some old friends, and attend a banquet of honor for the soon-to-be retired Bill Kisinger. On October 3, 2006, the St. Louis Rams visited Lambeau Field for a football game. While the game would end in a heartbreaking loss on a Favre fumble, it was a beautiful day, aided by the presence of the Southern Miss Marching Band to help celebrate Brett Favre's birthday.

December 21, 2006 was a cold, rainy night, and many thought it would be Brett Favre's final home game in Lambeau Field. While he proved us all wrong by returning the next year, a hard-fought football game would develop despite the weather!

June 23, 2007 saw the AT&T 250 come again to the Milwaukee Mile, and I invited Cyndi and Brian to come watch cars go in a circle. I'll admit it, even if they only do turn left, things that go fast still hold my fascination. We saw a terrific race, had a great time, and will remember to bring grilling utinsels the next time.

Hard to believe it's been 2 years, but it's Alumni Band time again at this year's Purdue Homecoming game. A fantastic weekend that combined the best of all worlds. Friends, parties, marching around in circles, and a great football game. Not even a wet, cold, dreary Saturday could dampen our spirits! The Packers, with a chance to clinch an NFC North Division title, took on the Oakland Raiders at Lambeau Field on December 9th, 2007. Amy and I would watch the Green and Gold go on to crush the opposition and lock up their third straight division title.

January 12, 2008, saw the return of playoff football to the hallowed arena of Lambeau Field. The Packers, as NFC North division champions, welcomed in the NFC West division champion Seattle Seahawks. The game was a classic winter matchup, with a ton of snow falling, and the Packers emerging victorious.

January 20, 2008 gave the Green Bay Packers the chance to host the New York Giants in the NFC Championship game. The game was played in bitter cold, reaching wind chills far below 0. Bundled up against the elements, David and I headed to Lambeau to watch the game.

Like last year, June brought the NASCAR Nationwide Series to Milwaukee, and I was again joined by Cyndi and Brian to attend the race. Carl Edwards would wind up being able to turn left faster than the rest of the field, and a great night at the track was had by all!

In early July, the Brewers made a trade to get CC Sabathia, one of the better pitchers in the league. On the spur of the moment, like many Brewers fans that Tuesday night, we headed to the ballpark to see our new ace pitch his very first game for the Brewers. We weren't disappointed.

In the early fall weather, Amy and I went down to Purdue to catch a football game. The weather was sunny but cold, and the football team mounted little challenge against Big Ten powerhouse Penn State, but it was an enjoyable weekend to spend with friends!

Lori Morford and Tom Wrobel were married in Canton, Michigan, on July 10, 2004. As a friend of both the bride and the groom, I was asked to be an usher, and gladly accepted. These pictures are from a three day span of travel and time with friends, encompassing one of the best weddings I've ever been a part of.

Cyndi Sudhoff and Brian Portteus were married in West Lafayette, Indiana, on May 28, 2005. Brian tasked me with the duty of being the Best Man, and as a friend of both he and Cyndi, I was more than happy to accept. These pictures detail the fun that ensued during the wedding weekend!

David and Erica Hornthal were married in a ceremony in Chicago's Sears Tower on August 31, 2008. The traditional Jewish wedding featured dinner, dancing, and friends!

Wendy Ahlemeyer, a friend from Purdue Bands, and Brian Thayer were married in Indianapolis, Indiana, on May 8, 2010. The wedding was held at the White River Gardens at the Indianapolis Zoo, and the reception was held in the Gardens' entry and presentation hall. A great time was had by all!

My parents looked after a friend's dog for a while one summer. The dog, Hunter, beared a striking resemblance to our previous iterations of hunting Springer Spaniels, Choice and Dealer, so my parents were more than happy to spend some time with Hunter.

On November 2, at the age of 89, my grandmother Dorothy Gjesdahl passed away. Several days later, on November 5, friends and family gathered in Green Bay for a service of remembrance.

On the 14th of December, 2008, I took part in the Marquette graduation ceremony, with a shiny new MBA to my name. Two and a half years of work and sacrifce led to this moment, wherein I was able to wear a taupe colored hood, and have an evacuation instead of a recessional.

On Wednesday, October 27, 2004, most of the eastern United States was treated to a total lunar eclipse, the last such event until 2007. With my trusty digital camera, a tripod, and a whole lot of patience, I decided I should try to get some pictures of the eclipse. It turned out to be a learning experience.

Several things limited the shots I was able to take:
1.) Light Pollution: These pictures were taken from Birmingham, Alambama, and there was quite a bit of ambient light pollution. This causes any long-exposure (deep field) picture to wash out. As such, the quality of the deep field shots was limited.
2.) No Telescope: This might have been the driver I needed to get a telescope and camera mount. Without a telescope, I was stuck with shots that are basically what you can see from the ground. So don't expect any amazing shots of the moon's surface.
3.) Clouds: The bane of any sky-watcher. There were a lot of clouds in the area, moving through quickly. As a matter of fact, just as totality occurred, a band of clouds rolled in, obscuring the moon for the remainder of the eclipse. I was lucky enough to see totality, but was unable to get a picture of it.
